Waterlogue app turns ordinary photos of Japan into beautiful works of art

Waterlogue app turns ordinary photos of Japan into beautiful works of art

Japanese Twitter and Instagram users have discovered Waterlogue , an app that allows you to “transform your photos into luminous watercolors,” and now there is an endless surge of ordinary images turned artsy photos on both sites. We’re not sure if the following examples can be considered art since they were created with a few clicks of an index finger, but they are beautiful nonetheless.

If you’re still not entirely sure what Waterlogue does, allow us to show you an example. The app allows users to upload ordinary photos like this:

And makes them look like watercolor paintings, like this:

Even the most mundane items, like your profile summary on Twitter, look like works of art thanks to the app:

Let’s take a look at some of the most impressive watercolor-style photos from Japan that have all been created using Waterlogue.

Cats are a favorite Waterlogue subject amongst Japanese Twitter users. They look quite stoic, actually:

Japanese Netizens Rally Behind Politician Arrested For Brutally Attacking Wife’s Lover

Earlier this month in Kanagawa Prefecture, a high ranking government official was arrested for allegedly assaulting  his wife’s “male acquaintance.” The attack took place when Mr. Noda (47) discovered his wife entering a hotel with another man (44) after following her when she left home late in the evening. In the heat of the moment, Mr. Noda confronted them and allegedly ended up severely beating the man in the face and chest, breaking several ribs.

A few days after the confrontation, the alleged victim filed a complaint with the authorities. After Mr. Noda was arrested, the story hit blogs across the internet and triggered a landslide of support for him.

“Innocent” is the word that came up most often in comments of support for Mr. Noda from that ubiquitous green internet user Anonymous. In every comment posted anywhere regarding the case, it’s hard to find anyone disagreeing with Mr. Noda’s actions. One commenter sums it up by saying: “A man has to do what he did.”

While some people went as far as suggesting he should have hit his wife too, most others applaud his chivalry at taking his aggression out on the guy only. One person commented how it was kind of cool to see someone in government who could break a guy’s chest with his bare hands.

But it wasn’t all blind support for Mr. Noda.  Some surprisingly sober (for the internet) comments came in suggesting that the man with his wife may not have even known she was married.  It’s possible, but unlikely given that they went out of their way to go to a hotel late in the evening.

If the case is as straight forward as it’s presented to be, than it’s really hard for any guy to disagree with what Mr. Noda did.  Even if I was the guy who got beaten, I would understand and not press charges against him.  I think Anonymous said it best: “If [Noda] isn’t found innocent, then I have no faith in Japan’s sense of justice.”

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

If you look closely at the photo above, you’ll see that inside this sushi roll there’s no rice. Instead, it’s filled with the goodness of instant noodles!

The lifeblood of students, singles and people who just don’t have time to cook, the humble noodle has been used in many ways over the years and now it’s seeing a new dawn, wrapped in a roll and plated up as sushi. And did I mention this baby is wrapped in bacon?

We’ll give you the easy, step-by-step recipe after the jump, but purists be warned: the following images may disturb. Everybody else: come on in and take a seat!

We’ve got American food blogger The Vulgar Chef to thank for this recipe. If you’re after some tasty food without all the fuss, this is actually one of the easiest recipes you could wish for.

Ingredients:

– Instant Noodles (4 packs)

– Shredded Cheese (2 cups/472grams)

– Bacon

– Kimchee or pickled Chinese cabbage

– Chilli Sauce (optional)

Step 1

Boil up some instant noodles. When they’re done, tip out the water and add a good quantity of cheese to combine the mixture together. Pop the whole pot in the fridge to cool for 15 minutes.

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Step 2

Give the cold noodles a good stir.

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Step 3

Lay out some cling wrap on top of a sushi mat.

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Step 4

Spread the noodle mix out in a flat layer on the cling wrap and place a layer of nori seaweed on top.

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Step 5

Place the filling on the seaweed, working from the middle to the edge closest to you. Make sure you peel back the plastic as you roll it up tight.

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Step 6

Wrap the roll in strips of grilled bacon. Mmmm … bacon …

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Step 7

Sprinkle with chopped basil and cut into pieces. For even more flavour, top with chilli sauce and you’re done!

What’s better than sushi? Ramen sushi!

Grotesque or genius? We really can’t decide. Now that we’ve seen ramen sushi, we can’t help but wonder if sushi ramen might be lurking around the corner. That would be another one to add to the repertoire!

Purritos hit Japan! Twitter users can’t stop wrapping their cats and it’s too cute!

Purritos hit Japan! Twitter users can’t stop wrapping their cats and it’s too cute!

Cats are notorious for being finicky and difficult sometimes (okay, actually quite a lot of the time). As  cat lovers we learn to cherish every head-butt and hand-nuzzle that our feline buddies dole out as and when the mood strikes them, but sometimes you’ve got to take matters into your own hands if you want to get some loving. If kitty’s resisting your advances, try gently wrapping them up in a big old “purrito” with an old towel or blanket, then you’ll have a captive audience for your snuggles and smooches!

Trust us, cats love it, and if you don’t believe us, check out this purrito gallery!

While purritos have existed in the West for a while now, it wasn’t until recently that Japan got in on the kitty-wrapping act when a purrito craze hit Twitter in Japan. Having heard that loosely swaddling their kitties could help them to relax, a bunch of cat owners decided to try it out on their little bundles of fur, thoughtfully documenting the results for us to coo over!

If, despite that gallery of happy, whiskery faces up there, you still think that cats can’t possible enjoy being made into a purrito, then perhaps science can convince you! Apparently, cats feel relaxed in snug spaces due to a kind of residual kittenhood, when they were often squished up tightly along with their siblings while nursing from their mother. Vets recommend “swaddling” nervous cats to help calm them down during health checks or other times of trauma, such as when fireworks are going off outside. Swaddling also works well to immobilise a struggling cat during the administering of medicine.

Is your pet cat too lazy and uninspiring? Turn him into Totoro!

Is your pet cat too lazy and uninspiring? Turn him into Totoro!

Cats, eh? Lying around in the sun all day, ignoring their owners until their greedy little bellies are empty or they have an itch that they can’t scratch on their own. Anyone would think they weren’t put on this earth to constantly entertain us!

But if your pet cat simply isn’t in the mood to play and is the kind that will let you place random objects on its back without clawing your face off or vowing to smother you in your sleep, this little trick to transform an inactive furry pal in everyone’s favourite Studio Ghibli fluffball Totoro might be just the way to liven them up!

Making clever use of its beautiful grey fur (in a nice way!), Japanese Twitter user @bump_take transformed his cat by placing just a few bits of paper on its back and head. With a marker pen, a few paper circles and an oval for a nose, this napping feline becomes a mystical forest god in the blink of an eye!

Is your pet cat too lazy and uninspiring? Turn him into Totoro!

▼ And here’s the original Ghibli character just for comparison.

Is your pet cat too lazy and uninspiring? Turn him into Totoro!

That’s a job well done, we’d say! And with more than 18,000 retweets so far it looks like Japan’s online community would agree! Let it never be said that arts and crafts are dead. Coming soon: using nothing but a roll of Sellotape and some cotton balls, our very own Mr. Sato transforms his pet hamster into Jigglypuff…

This is not the stormtrooper you’re looking for: Cosplayer mistaken for real life servant of the Empire, arrested at Sapporo Station

A Sapporo cosplayer found himself on the wrong side of the law recently after apparently putting together the world’s most realistic stormtrooper outfit. So terrifying was the costume that someone mistook him for a real life soldier and ransacker of peaceful planets and called the cops after spotting him strolling through JR Sapporo Station.

It seems crazy that someone in the civilized world would actually be unaware of the iconic stormtrooper of Star Wars fame, but our guess is whoever reported the cosplayer to the police was one of those dag nab teenagers, too busy listening to hip hop music and playing violent video games to watch the classics.

We feel for the hapless stormtrooper, who probably meant no harm. But on the other hand, having a costume so realistic that you actually provoke a police response is probably some kind of cosplayer badge of honor.

▼ Extra points if you’re arrested while carrying a harmless latte.

This is not the stormtrooper you’re looking for: Cosplayer mistaken for real life servant of the Empire, arrested at Sapporo Station

In a separate incident at Sapporo Station on the same day, another man was caught wandering around in nothing but a pair of undies. We actually don’t think walking around in underwear is illegal in Japan, so we can only assume the man experienced some kind of catastrophic wardrobe malfunction , prompting the police to haul him away too.

The twist to the story is that on the same day, March 26, an anonymous Twitter user warned that he or she planned to kill someone in Sapporo, putting the police and public on high alert as the tweet spread. Captain Underpants and stormtrooper, it appears, were really just victims of incredibly poor timing.

Family Mart: Master of disguise?

Family Mart: Master of disguise?

When setting up shop around famous landmarks, it never hurts to blend in. Especially in Japan, where tourism accounts for roughly five percent of the GDP. You wouldn’t want to destroy the tourist attraction by ruining the ambiance, right?

On the other hand, there’s not really very much that’s “traditional” about Family Mart convenience stores, so we had to wonder what kind of disguise would get slapped on their store near Ise Grand Shrine…

It turns out, something like this.

Family Mart: Master of disguise?

As far as convenience store costumes go, that’s pretty good! We especially like the kawara (tiled) roof and excessive use of wood in keeping with the local aesthetic.

The picture above was snapped by a Twitter user named RYU, who wondered if his eyes did deceive him. According to Ryu, the convenience store is open 24 hours a day–perfect for when sun goddess Amaterasu is really craving some late-night karaage chicken!

Here are a few more pictures from around the web.

▼Note the second floor cafe! That’s how you know it’s a really fancy conbini!Family Mart: Master of disguise?

▼Sepia tones: for when old-looking just isn’t looking old enough!

Family Mart: Master of disguise?

Japanese Internet users had this to say about the sneaky store:

It’s kind of hard to spot, isn’t it?

I happened to be there the other day! Despite all the effort they put into the exterior, the interior was disappointingly normal…

It’s kind of like Kyoto [where there are strict rule to maintain the classic architecture].

I like this store. It reminds me of my childhood.

If you happen to be visiting Ise Grand Shrine this summer, be sure to stop by this Family Mart and let us know how it is!
