Was Katy Perry’s Super Bowl flame dress inspired by boob-headed Pokemon?
Ever since she fired whipped cream from her boobs, the world has been aware that Katy Perry isn’t afraid of crazy costumes. Compared to that, her outfits for her half-time performance at the Super Bowl XLIX were actually comparatively tame. And yet, dancing sharks aside, one in particular has still sparked interest online with people spotting similarities between it and a multitude of other unexpected things.
As a Brit I’m still not entirely sure what the fascination is, but I hear that the Super Bowl is kind of a Big Deal. The annual sporting megamatch, a star-studded event now watched as much for the commercials and celebrity performances as for the actual sport, was just held for the 49th year running, and Katy Perry was there to entertain spectators during the half-time break. She went through a few outfit changes, but this garish flame dress in particular seems to have taken netizens’ fancies. While my first thought was that she was going for some kind of Hunger Games statement, other people saw many other different things in it.
▼The aptly named Boober is fiery Pokémon who unfortunately has two boob-like protrusions on his forehead. However, it wasn’t Katy’s boobs that drew comparisons, but the cartoon flames billowing across her dress.

Katy’s designer, Jeremy Scott , hasn’t actually said where the original spark of inspiration came from, so any one of the above could potentially be right! But would a top fashion designer ever admit he was inspired by a Will Ferrel character, let alone a pokémon? Not likely. Until he does shed some light on the matter, we’ll be here watching this Left Shark vine on loop. Never forget.
