Chinese man wakes with centipede in his ear: hilarity does not ensue

We’ve probably all had itty-bitty insects fly into our mouths or eyes or even up our noses at one point in time. Whether it’s a mosquito zipping down your throat as you go for a jog or a dive-bombing gnat attacking your eyeball with laser precision, it’s definitely not pleasant. Though it rarely amounts to anything more than a minor annoyance.

For one Chinese man, though, this “minor annoyance” was more like hellish torture.

After waking up in the middle of the night with pain in his ear, Che roused one of his dorm mates. Complaining not only of pain but also of something “wiggling” in his ear, Che was rushed to the hospital to be examined by doctors.

And what did they find? Well, it wasn’t a lollipop, that’s for sure.

After a preliminary diagnosis, the doctor used forceps to pull a centipede out of the poor man’s ear.

But even after enduring that nightmare, his troubles weren’t over!

Che then complained of numbness throughout his neck and ear, leading the doctor to conclude that, “the centipede might have damaged the eardrum, leaving some poison behind.” (In case you’re wondering, that’s the sound of your skin crawling with horror right now.)

From there, it was recommended that Che receive some “traditional Chinese medicinal treatment” and the man was taken in ambulance. Fortunately, the poison cleared out of his body on the way with no signs of lasting effects.

How could this happen and, more importantly, how can you avoid similar cephalic invasions?

It seems that Che’s room was fairly humid and that on-going construction in the next building was uprooting great numbers of these centipedes ( Japan’s number two most hated insect ). Poor little guy was just looking for somewhere nice and warm to stay. In other words, we don’t really have any advice to avoid this sort of scenario. Maybe try sleeping with ear plugs?

▼Not what was found in his ear. We hope.

It may also interest you, dear reader, to know that last year saw a similar incident in which a woman spent five days walking around with pain in her ear before going to the hospital. The diagnosis? A spider had taken up residence.

Please excuse us, we’re going to go bandage our entire head with Saran wrap now.
